ISO 17799 and BS7799
As explained on the security page, publication of, and adherence to, security policies is an extremely important facet of help desk management. In recent years the policies themselves have drifted towards conformity with the international security standard: ISO 17799, or BS7799. However, the importance of these standards extends well beyond policy.
ISO 17799 and BS7799 in many respects mirror the ITIL protocol - they are becoming common currency. Organizations are beginning to use them to gain market leverage, to use certification as a market differentiator. As a result, the position of the help desk (as sometimes a very public interface) is a critical part of this picture.
The standard itself comprises two parts. The first part, known ad ISO 17799 or BS7799 Part 1, details the individual security standards. The second part, however, is probably more important. This is known as BS7799 Part 2 (not an ISO standard yet) and details management systems for security.
Again, adoption of the standard is usually a central initiative. However, without doubt, its importance to help desk management is important and is growing.
